We are living in a changed world. Everything around us has been changed somehow, sometime, somewhere along this journey of life. The price of super unleaded gasoline in the U.S. back in 1979 was $0.80 per gallon, but now in 2014, it is $4.40. The price of merchandise changes, politicians change, world leaders change, people change, currency changes, the weather changes, circumstances change, the environment changes; everything around us changes. We ourselves change, but there is someone who never changes, the Lord Jesus Christ. He never changes. The bible says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8.
What can we learn from this one precious and powerful verse? There are at least three principles of truth that we can learn from and live by:
1) His promises never change – Someone said that the whole bible contains over 7,000 promises of God for those who put their trust in the Son of God. Can the Son of God the Lord Jesus Christ keep them all? Absolutely yes, He is able to fulfill what He has promised. “For in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes’.” 2 Corinthians 1:20. The promise of God is true and trustworthy, we can count on it and have full confidence in it. “God is not a human being, and he will not lie. He is not a human, and he does not change his mind. What he says he will do, he does. What he promises, he makes come true.” Numbers 23:19. What are the promises God has made with us as His people? These are some of the promises God made with us: He promises eternal life when we believe, John 6:47. He accepts us as His children when we believe, John 1:12. He is always with us, Matthew 28:20. He blesses us when we obey Him, Joshua 1:8. He protects us, 1 Peter 1:5. He provides for our needs, Philippians 4:19. He lives inside us forever, John 14:16-17. He leads us to the end, Psalm 48:14. He comforts us, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. He counsels us, Psalm 32:8. He teaches us the truth, John 14:26. He teaches us to love one another, 1 Thessalonians 4:9. He strengthens us, Psalm 29:11. He satisfies our thirsty soul, Psalm 107:9. He blesses us with His peace, Psalm 29:11. He seals us with his Spirit, Ephesians 1:13-14. He gives us joy, John 15:11. He will be coming back for us, John 14:1-4. O what blessed promises God has made to us as His beloved people. What happens when we stand on and trust in His promises? When we stand on and trust in God’s promises, it will change the way we serve, it will shape our lives, and it will impact the lives of those around us. Remember this, one of our weaknesses is that we can not keep all of the promises we have made, but the Lord Jesus can; His promises remain the same yesterday, today, and forever. Let us keeps claiming these promises for our own life in our daily walk with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and sharing these promises with those in need of Him.
2) His personality never changes – People’s personalities change and our personality changes, but the personality of the Lord Jesus Christ never changes; His heart, His faithfulness, His compassion, His unconditional love for you and me and the whole world and everything in Him will never change. He loved us yesterday, He loves us today, and He will love us forever. There is nothing that can separate us from God’s unconditional love, unchanging love, and indescribable love, Romans 8:38-39. He will always love you and me. His mercy and compassion for you and me will never change, they are never ceasing, they are new every morning, Lamentation 3:22-23. Because the personality of the Lord Jesus never changes, we can learn about Him and live like Him and become more like Him each and every day with His help. The Lord Jesus Christ is our only perfect model in heart, in faithfulness, in compassion, in caring, and in love for others. Let us continue to live like Jesus lived. That is the ultimate purpose of our calling. His personality remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. You and I can follow His footsteps by living a good and godly life for His glory.
3) His plan never changes – The Lord Jesus has His plan for your life and my life. Those plans never change. What are the plans He has for you and me? Even though we sometimes do not know the specific details of God’s plan, something we do know for sure is that His plan is always good, always right, and always purposeful. Let us take a look at His plans, “I say this because I know what I am planning for you, says the Lord. I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future.” Jeremiah 29:11. According to this verse God himself already made known His specific plan for us: first, He plans to give us hope and second He plans to give us a good future. These plans are wonderful. Remember this, even though God allows us to go through dark days, deep waters, and difficulties, it does not mean we are out of His plan, instead, they are part of God’s plan for us. Remember this, no one can mess up God’s plan for you and me. “We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him. They are the people he called, because that was his plan. God knew them before he made the world, and he chose them to be like his Son” Romans 8:28-29. “God began doing a good work in you, and I am sure he will continue it until it is finished when Jesus Christ comes again.” Philippians 1:6. “God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.” Ephesians 2:10. May we continue to embrace and exalt the unchanging Christ in every moment of our lives and may we be encouraged by His unchanging promises, His unchanging personality, and His unchanging plan from this day forward. May God grant us commitment, confidence, and courage to live for Him and to love Him with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength.
