Love is a feeling. For most of us that is probably our first answer. We feel loved, have the desire to feel loved, or feel love for someone. It is something that comes from within us, has some rational and irrational components and is an ever moving target! Are you experiencing the feeling of love right now or lacking it? Have you opened your heart to God about what you are feeling? He cares deeply about you.
Love is a choice. There is great power in love and we can choose to harness that power and direct it toward what ever we feel drawn to. We can choose to respond in a loving way, think loving thoughts, use loving words regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in. What a difference we can make in our families, workplace, neighborhood, or general spheres of life if we choose to act with love towards others. Jesus said “whatever you did it to the least of these”, and I think He was thinking of choosing to show acts of love, “you did it for me.” Mt. 25:40 When we realize that love is a choice we also can realize that we are given an invitation. How do you respond? Do you need help choosing to love? Ask Him to help you. He desires to increase your ability to choose to love.
Love is a gift. I do not always deserve to be loved and I bet you don’t either. I also don’t always freely give the gift of love. A gift is not about what you, or I deserve, it wouldn’t be a called a gift. A gift is something we are given, or that you give because…because you have been blessed…because you want to be a blessing…because you are a child of God who holds the keys to the great storehouse of gifts and has invited you to come in and go shopping! God invites you because He loves you and He invites you to love others in the same way. Jesus told us that the greatest commandment was really two: Love God, love one another Lk 10:27 – get the gift, give the gift! Have you accepted His invitation toward love as a gift? If you are holding back, ask Him to help you both receive and give the gift of love.
So I invite you to think for yourself as I think for myself – What is love anyway?
(Hint: God has the answer and He loves to give it to us. Ask Him!)
