If any of this rings true for you, you are much like Jesus’ disciples as they approached Holy Week, and I think what Jesus said to them then, He says to us today. Let’s consider what He said as they expressed their fears and doubts as He told them He would be leaving them, news they could not understand or embrace, news they did not want to be true then or ever. Does that sound like you, where you are today?
First, Jesus told them not to be troubled or disturbed by the news. This was part of the plan unfolding. God was on the move and moving toward the destiny that was given to Him. When we hear news that troubles us, or disturbs us, there is an opportunity to look deeper and to seek what God is doing. This is countercultural, it was countercultural, but that is God’s way, not humankind’s way. There is a divine plan for the kingdom of God to reign and the twists and turns of life that seem so improbable can be used by God to bring His kingdom.
Secondly, follow Jesus, He knows the way. Jesus actually makes it easy. He doesn’t list a lot of complicated do and don’ts, rather He says “Follow me!” Come along and see what I do, where I go and what I say…watch me and learn. Jesus readily shows the way through tough times by living through them and responding to them. He shows us how to be patient, to really listen, to pray to the Father, to take action and to cease action.
Finally Jesus says, trust the Holy Spirit that I give to each of you who call me their Lord. The Holy Spirit is a gift I give to you, to help you, to guide you, to be present to you. The Holy Spirit can be with you in any time, in any place or in any circumstance that you find yourself in. The Holy Spirit speaks truth and only truth. When you spend time with the Holy Spirit He gives you the gift of peace.
After Jesus spoke all this to His disciples He said “Come, let go!” Let’s go face what you have before you. You and Me, together, we’ll face it head on and I will stay right with you…You can trust Me, for I promise I will never leave you…I love you and you are Mine!
Read the Gospel of John, chapter 14. It is written for you, for now, because…He love you and wants you to know it anew in your life’s situations, in the confusion, disappointments, uncertainty and changes that make up each of your todays. He sees you, and He is there for you, and He always will be!
