What is FCC Serve Day?
Serve Day is a multi-church effort that happens 3-4 times per year to mobilize people to support local organizations and meet community needs. This year, our first Serve Day is scheduled on Aug 23 at 9am - noon. We will be in partnership with the Day of Peace event of Project Peace: East Bay (read more below) to maximize our impact on the city through multi-church collaboration. The Laurel Elementary School project will be led by leaders from our church, and there are 6 other project sites led by folks from other churches on that day. It is also a kids-friendly volunteering project as long as a young kid is accompanied by a guardian or a parent. Check out all the projects on the Day of Peace Eventbrite website.
Why we do Serve Day?
The church has the greatest reason to serve - we are motivated by God’s acceptance of us in Jesus to love and serve the city around us. We get to experience God's love first hand while we serve - it becomes real in us when we put love into action. Serve Day is also an excellent opportunity to invite friends and neighbors who would not normally feel comfortable attending a "church event".
Serve Week was such a success. So why change it to Serve Day?
Serve Week 2013 was a tremendous success in mobilizing our church to serve Oakland. This year, we want to engage our community on a more regular basis. So instead of an annual Serve Week, we will organize 3-4 Serve Days throughout 2014-2015 calendar year. This, we believe, will provide more continuity in meeting the needs of local organizations and will also create more entry-ways for volunteers to be exposed to the needs of the community.
What is Project Peace: East Bay? Why do we partner with them?
The success of Serve Week 2013 inspired us to want to share this experience with other Oakland churches. Initially, we wanted to take the lead and approach other churches to join us in future project days and outreach campaigns. In the process, we discovered Project Peace: East Bay, which is a Christian non-profit organization that is already doing a great job in coordinating churches in the East Bay area to serve unmet community needs. So we decided to join force with them with the hope of sharing resources and expertise and maximizing impact on our city. Go to Project Peace: East Bay website to learn more about who they are and their values. You can also talk to our project leaders or Pastor Calvin for more information about the partnership.
How do I sign up?
Sign up on Sunday at the Welcome Center at church or online.
What are some other ways to contribute if I cannot join the Serve Day on Aug 23?
You can give to help buy supplies for teachers and students. Our goal is to raise $650 to support 23 home room teachers and 15 students. Donations are accepted on Aug 17 and 24 in the Welcome Area. Our next Serve Day is scheduled on Nov 8 so mark your calendar for it.
