Who We Are

We value Exploration, Transformation, Connection and Celebration, and we seek to answer these two questions:

  • Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior and desire to follow him as Lord?
  • Do you believe in the Bible as the word of God and the only perfect rule for faith, doctrine, and conduct?

That's all. That is enough. You may ask, why so simple? On one hand, this singular focus on Jesus Christ as the center of our beliefs is what attracts a lot of people from different denominational background to the Evangelical Covenant Church. We want to make the main thing the main thing and that is to follow Jesus Christ. Having Christ as our focal point gives us the model of how to live our lives. We believe we have the freedom to have different convictions on the non-essential elements, such as how baptism ought to be performed or our views of the second coming of Christ. We believe that this diversity, even though messy, is a sign of spiritual maturity. On the other hand, our "freedom in Christ" is not without constraint. We are not free to hold whatever we want to believe. Our convictions are constrained by what is written in the Word of God. Thus, we are also very serious students of the Bible. Our freedom is also constrained by our exercising of Christian love and respect for each other when we differ while always seeking to be biblical learners.

Our Story as "the Mission Friends"

The Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) is a rapidly growing multiethnic denomination in the United States and Canada with ministries on five continents of the world. It was started as an outgrowth of a revival movement in Europe that attracted many people who desires a more authentic faith in Jesus and do mission together, thus our early name "the Mission Friends". Our history as a revival and missional movement also explains our high view of the Bible as God's word, our emphasis on the necessity of new birth and new life in Jesus Christ, our engagement in the whole mission of the Church, and our strength that comes from unity within diversity as a fellowship of believers, and our conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit. We seek to do justice, compassionate acts, and love mercy in our communities and throughout the world.

To read a more thorough discussion of the beliefs of ECC, you may find these brochures (short version/long version) helpful. If you are interested in FCC's governing philosophy, our Constitution and By-law is also available here.
